Inspiration for Breaking Through Individual & Organizational Inertia

Inspiration for Breaking Through Individual & Organizational Inertia

In perusing Twitter the other day one of those I'm following posted the quote below in one of his Tweets.
For those of my subscribers that sometimes are challenged with personal procrastination, are stuck in a state of company inertia or continue to choose to tolerate employees and teammates who procrastinate on tasks and projects on the job, I tound this quote to be quite pertinent.
So, I'm keeping this post short and sweet, as a reminder that -
"Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced." - James A. Baldwin
The tweet was posted by Steve Keating, who's Twitter handle is Twitter.com/LeadToday. Thank, Steve, keep the inspirations coming
So, with that thought in mind it is time to focus on the following three questions:

1) What are you not doing that you should be doing?
2) What are you doing that you must stop doing?
3) What is something you are committed to start doing in response to question #1 above?
Get started.

Champion Leadership Tip #9 - Stop Trying to Motivate Your People

Champion Leadership Tip #9 - Stop Trying to Motivate Your People!

Monday, January 4, 2010
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Everyone is motivated! I'll write that again in case you missed it. Everyone is motivated!
What? You say, that's impossible, you haven't met my son-in-law. Yes, Virginia, even your son-in-law is motivated. His motivation may be to lay on the couch with the remote control while your daughter supports their household, but he is motivated.
Everyone is motivated.
But, are they motivated towards the right things? A procrastinator is motivated to put things off. A high-performing sales person is motivated to put money in his commission check. A homeless person is motivated to panhandle for his next meal.
If everyone is motivated then what do they need leaders for, you might ask?
The leaders job is to inspire their people to apply their motivation towards the right things. Inspiration gets people to apply their motivation towards goals and objectives that fulfill a particular purpose.
"Motivation" gets people to act in a certain fashion, but "Inspiration" directs that action in the areas that get the best results for the right reasons, fulfilling a particular cause or purpose.
The early moments of 2010, as in any new year, are the ideal time for leaders to leverage the optimism, enthusiasm and motivation for making this a great year that many people start out with, with an inspiring focus on achieving purposeful results.
Human beings want to know that their able to make a difference in the world. They want to know that they are on this earth for a purpose and leaders can inspire individuals to buy-into and fulfill a purpose in their role with the organization.
How are you inspiring your people? What is the ultimate purpose that you can focus your people's attention on that will have the greatest impact on themselves, the organization, your organization's customers and clients, and the community in which it serves.
As a leader start today to identify the specific ways your organization makes a difference and then connect that purpose to the role each person on your team fulfills.
That's inspiration! Doing so will take their motivation in the right direction and get your year off to a fast start with a motivated team.
Have fun!

Gratitude to My Blog Subscribers, Government Loan Program and Free Tele-Seminar Announcement

This is just a quick pre-holiday note going out to all Champion Organization Blog subscribers to say "Thank You" for joining me on my new journey and brand and trust you are finding value in the weekly "Champion Leadership Tips."

Two points of interest:

1) Did you know that the SBA through the US Federal Government's "American Recovery and Reinvestment Act" is offering a deferred loan program for small businesses that can receive up to $35,000? I just learned about it from this article that came through my e-mail. Maybe I've been sleeping but thought others may need to learn about this, too. Check it out and forward the link to your friends and colleagues, and maybe your banker, too!

2) On Monday, December 7th I will be offering the "End Procrastination NOW!" TeleSeminar at 12noon Eastern Time. Details will be out early next week with the call-in phone number and access code. So be on the look out for that.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Procrastination Still A Problem for Success Small Business Owners

During the Champion Business Alliance Group Workshop last week I asked my favorite question, which broaches the subject of procrastination, "what are you not doing that you should be doing?"

It never ceases to get even the most savvy and successful business owners or CEOs squirm in their seats. The list of items from our attendees included:

    • creating and implementing a marketing strategy
    • addressing my time management issues
    • addressing important personnel issues
    • performance reviews
    • following up on marketing calls
    • creating a partner agreement for our firm
    • collecting on past due receivables

The above issues are common and I hear them consistently whenever I bring up the issue of procrastination when speaking with a business owner or senior executive.

You will notice they fall into just a couple of categories, marketing and sales, personnel performance management issues, and dealing with financial issues. Although all three can cause significant problems for a business my biggest concern is addressing the performance issues. Failing to deal with employee performance can lead to low morale and poor attitudes in the workplace.

For those that want to stop procrastinating and become a more effective leader I have some resources. The resources on this page are all free audio recordings, one is an interview I did on an internet radio show with organizing expert Monica Ricci a couple of years ago, and the other is an End Procrastination NOW! tele-seminar I offered to my newsletter subscribers.

For those that would want full access to my complete workshop that helps people to stop procrastinating you can check out the full End Procrastination NOW! audio workshop here.
